We design work environments

for over 600 CSC employees

For the third year in a row, we have partnered with the CSC IT Center for Science, also known as the supercomputer Lumi, to develop work environments. The contract covers developing and designing work environments for CSC offices, working closely with the CSC office team.

CSC’s offices are located in Espoo and Kajaani, where around 650 CSC experts work. “We chose Rune & Berg Design because of your professionalism, good work ethic and understanding of today’s work environments and how to develop them,” says Eveliina Hiljanen, Development Manager of CSC’s office team, about the selection process.

We have extensively supported CSC’s work environment transformation. The cooperation started by clarifying the needs of the work environment and creating a work environment concept, which included a future vision of the CSC working ways and spatial needs. The work environment concept has guided the headquarters’ space selection, decision-making, and design choices.

“At CSC, we believe workplaces are first and foremost

for employees.“

The collaboration focuses on designing the 7,000 square metres new headquarters at Keilaniemen Portti, which will be completed in 2026. We carried out a user-centred comparison of sites and space utilisation potential to support the management team in their choice of headquarters location. During the lease negotiations, our role included commenting on the quality specifications and lease terms regarding the utilisation of the space.

The work environment design of the new CSC headquarters will focus on supporting multi-location work that is equal for all, smooth collaboration and focused work in the office, and a space and work culture that promotes overall well-being. CSC is aiming to obtain international WELL certification for its facilities. The project will also pay strong attention to Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI).

“At CSC, we believe workplaces are first and foremost for employees. The aim is to create an attractive and smooth working day experience that considers the different employee personalities and their needs,” summarises Maria Kiviniemi, CSC’s Facilities Manager. “We are team-oriented, and the facilities must reflect that. For example, the new office will have three floors instead of the current seven, which will help bring people closer together,” adds Nina Wallin, CSC’s work environment specialist.

The architecture design of the Keilaniemen Portti is by Arco and owned and built by Varma. The property is fully leased.

Employee experience development in the existing Espoo and Kajaani offices

In addition to designing the new headquarters, we are also responsible for developing the work environment of the existing Espoo office and the Kajaani data centre.

In Kajaani, we are currently exploring what kind of premises will best serve CSC employees and businesses in the future.

The current Espoo Life Science Center premises have already received several commendable updates to their functionality and design. “The space feels more peaceful now. Employees have found the space to be more comfortable and functional with a new look, better acoustics, more workstations and co-developed working methods,” says Nina.

The projects are carried out in close dialogue with CSC’s facilities and communications teams, and the importance of employee involvement was recognised early on: “Participation, such as surveys and pop-up kiosks, has played a vital role. Staff have been able to express their opinions and have an influence. It has also been important for us to get your perspective on what is being done elsewhere and what works. Not just doing what has always been done before,” says Eveliina satisfactorily.

“The cooperation has worked well. I particularly appreciate the active approach towards the project. Working with you shows professionalism and long experience – you know where to react and where to take the plans. I’m looking forward to seeing what the facilities will look like,” Nina concludes with a smile.
